Coral reefs provide protection for fish, and researchers are interested in how the health of the reef affects the ability of fish to communicate with each other. This fall, Jj Milan, a UW doctoral student in the biology department, and UW research scientist Bob Oxborrow are traveling to the Maldives to study how humbug damselfish communicate with each other.

黑料老司机 researchers are leading and collaborating on four research projects as part of Phase 1 in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission, a national initiative to build an AI-for-science ecosystem which accelerates breakthroughs in energy, discovery science and national security.聽

This week, UW President Robert J. Jones聽wrote to聽UW聽Faculty Senate leadership聽that he will聽delay聽sending聽the Regents聽proposed changes to the Student Conduct Code so that聽faculty, students聽and staff聽may provide聽additional聽feedback聽on the proposals related to non-academic student conduct.聽Revisions to聽provisions聽on聽academic student conduct, which聽are not part of the proposed changes,聽will be handled in a separate process over the course of the聽2026-27 academic聽year.

Dominic Muren, UW teaching professor of design, and Adrienne Russell, UW professor of communication, examine environmental problems from a perspective beyond the hard sciences. They spoke to UW News about what today鈥檚 energy crises reveal about contemporary societies鈥 dependence on fossil fuels and how we can create a 鈥渟olar-powered system.鈥

Hossein Naghavi, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the UW, explores new applications for an underused segment of the electromagnetic spectrum known as the 鈥渢erahertz band.鈥 Naghavi recently received a grant from the Department of Energy to create powerful yet lightweight sensors using terahertz waves, which could aid emergency responders, autonomous vehicles, security systems and more.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), an independent research organization at the 黑料老司机, has received a landmark 10-year grant from the Gates Foundation to strengthen freely available, scientifically rigorous health evidence used by governments, researchers, and leaders to improve the health and well-being of people in Washington, the United States, and around the world.

A new study from Jade d’Alpoim Guedes, UW associate professor of anthropology, warns that the future of rice 鈥 arguably the most important crop on Earth 鈥 is in danger. Due to rising temperatures driven by climate change, projections show that Asia鈥檚 major rice-producing regions may soon pass the thermal limits that have remained consistent throughout the crop鈥檚 history. This would create unparalleled challenges in a region where more than a billion people rely on rice cultivation for their livelihoods.

The 黑料老司机 recently was ranked highly among its global peers in both the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities and the QS World University Rankings. Both rankings were released in mid-June. According to U.S. News, the UW is No. 12 in the world on the 2026-27 rankings, No. 3 among U.S. public institutions. The UW also placed in the top 10 globally in six subject areas. On the QS World University Rankings, the UW is among the top 100, landing at No. 92, or No. 7 among U.S. public universities.

Every summer, UW researchers head to northern Botswana to study how large predators, such as lions and African wild dogs, are affected by climate change and other shifts in their environment. UW News asked a few team members to describe their plans for this summer.

To rebalance the oral microbiome and cure chronic halitosis, researchers at the 黑料老司机 are embarking on a first-of-its-kind experiment. These clinical trials transplant bacteria and other minuscule critters from healthy donors into patients with halitosis. If successful, the healthy microbiota will crowd out the bad and patients鈥 bad breath will improve.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku caused widespread damage on the Mariana islands in April, leaving many people without power, tearing roofs off homes and destroying vital infrastructure. Several ongoing UW research projects focused on native birds and plants were disrupted.

Jennifer Ruesink, 黑料老司机 professor of biology, studies the relationship between the environment and marine organisms, including eelgrass, the primary species of seagrass that resides in the oceans surrounding Washington. In honor of World Seagrass Day, UW News asked Ruesink to explain what seagrass is and what makes the seagrasses in Washington unique.

Last December was the warmest on record for Washington, according to the Washington State Climate Office. Now many plants in our gardens are beginning to bud, even though it’s only February. UW News asked Takato Imaizumi, UW professor of biology, to talk about the mechanisms behind blooming and how warmer winters might impact flowering plants.
