UW Recreation Policies

This page lists the policies and guidelines that must be followed when utilizing the IMA facilities, spaces, and equipment. Please refer to these sections to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all patrons.

Facility

Facility Policies

  • Access to UW Recreation facilities is a privilege and may be suspended or revoked for violations of university or recreation policies. Violations may result in removal from the facility and/or disciplinary action in accordance with WAC 478-121-210(d), Student Conduct Code.
  • All patrons must present a valid Husky ID or Rec Membership Card upon request by UW Recreation staff.
  • Patrons must swipe their Husky ID or Rec Membership Card each time they enter the facility for safety, security, and usage tracking.
  • A maximum of two entries per quarter is allowed without a card. After both are used, a day pass must be purchased for entry without a card. Patrons without a valid card must check in at the Member Services Desk with a photo ID.
  • Cards are non-transferable and may only be used by the assigned individual. A first misuse violation results in a one-week membership suspension. A second violation results in suspension for the remainder of the quarter or a duration determined by the Manager on Duty, in accordance with WAC 478-121-163(3), Student Conduct Code.

  • UW Recreation follows the 黑料老司机 Student Conduct Code. UW students must adhere to the Community Standards and Student Conduct (CSSC). All other members are expected to act in a courteous and respectful manner. Harassment, bullying, or abusive behavior鈥攊ncluding physical or verbal abuse, intimidation, threatening, abusive, or disruptive language, or discrimination based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation鈥攊s strictly prohibited.
  • No personal or commercial financial gain is allowed while using the facility. Personal training/coaching may be provided only by those individuals who are employed by UW Recreation.
  • Music in studios, gymnasiums, and mat rooms is permitted only with staff approval for each use. Portable speakers are not allowed in weight rooms, cardio areas, hallways, lounges, meeting rooms, or other shared spaces. The manager on duty may require music to be turned off if deemed too loud or disruptive.
  • Patrons must comply with directions given by UW Recreation staff. Failure to do so may result in removal from the facility or suspension of privileges.

  • UW Recreation does not provide medical or accident insurance. Participants are responsible for securing their own coverage. Students may obtain information on student accident/sickness insurance by contacting the Student Insurance Office; 206-543-6202; stdins@uw.edu.

  • Facilities and equipment must be used for intended purposes only.
  • Facility schedules are subject to change for special events.
  • If spaces are locked, they are closed and any unauthorized access is subject to trespass laws.
  • No posting or taping of flyers, posters or other literature is permitted in the building without prior approval from UW Recreation staff.
  • Group use (RSO鈥檚, Departments, etc.) of any activity space in the building is not permitted without prior approval from UW Recreation staff.
  • A group is defined as 鈥渁 number of users who access and use an activity space in the IMA that prevents others from use of the space.鈥 The determination of whether a group 鈥渋mpedes鈥 the use of others will be made by the IMA administration staff.

  • Clean, closed-toe, non-marking athletic footwear are required in all active workout and fitness areas. Bare feet or socks may be permitted in specific activity areas.
  • Shirts or athletic tops covering the chest are required in general activity and workout spaces.
  • No Wheeled vehicles of any kind are allowed. This does not include wheelchairs, mobility aids, and other power-driven mobility devices for the purposes of this policy. WAC 478-116-199.
  • The possession or use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or smoking/vaping of any kind is prohibited in the building.
  • Weapons of any kind (including firearms, explosives, and hazardous materials) are prohibited.
  • Food and beverages are only permitted in designated areas (lounge spaces and Dawg Bites Caf茅). In activity areas鈥攊ncluding cardio and weight rooms, studios, gymnasiums, courts, the pool, and track鈥攐nly water in a spill-proof, non-glass container is allowed.
  • Pets, other than Service Animals, are prohibited.

  • UW Recreation and all its facilities are non-essential areas, which means if the University suspends operations (example: full day closure, late start, or early close) UW Recreation and all its facilities will follow the University鈥檚 decision.
  • All patrons must adhere to the posted building closure time and vacate the building at that time.
  • Video Surveillance: UW Recreation has a video surveillance system that is reviewable by Recreation staff and UWPD. The video surveillance system is used to review possible policy violations, entry violations, and thefts.

  • Students, UW Employee Members, and Plus One Members may sponsor unlimited guests per day (must be a personal acquaintance) age 16 or older with valid physical photo ID (proof of age required) and payment of the single-use guest fee. The sponsor must be present at check-in and is responsible for their guest while in the facility.
  • Sponsors may bring up to three guests to purchase a same-day Crags Guest Pass. The sponsor must be present at purchase, though they do not need to remain in the climbing area. Guests must show proof of a valid IMA day pass for that day. Sponsors remain responsible for their guests鈥 conduct while using Crags.

Spaces

Spaces Policies

  • Archery is not permitted without supervision. Shooting is allowed only when UW Recreation staff or authorized Archery Club representatives are present, including during Archery Club practices and Friday Night Archery.
  • All instructions and commands from the archery supervisor must be followed at all times.
  • When not scheduled for archery or UW Recreation programming, the room may be used for other appropriate activities as permitted by staff.
  • Non-marking shoes are required.

  • Cell phone use should not interfere with the safe use of equipment or the experience of others.
  • During busy periods, patrons are expected to share equipment and allow others reasonable access.
  • Do not leave personal belongings on equipment.
  • Re-rack all weights after use; do not move equipment between areas.
  • Do not slam weights or drop dumbbells.
  • Only UW Recreation staff may provide training or coaching.
  • Use bumper plates and collars on lifting platforms.
  • Loose chalk is not permitted.
  • Clean equipment before and after use; sanitation stations are provided.

  • No court markings or tape on the floors.
  • All participants must wear athletic, non-marking, rubber-soled shoes on the courts. Street shoes, boots, sandals, flip-flops, and bare feet are not permitted.
  • Gyms are to be used for approved activities only i.e., basketball, volleyball, badminton.
  • During open recreation times courts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Pickup Basketball Rules:
    • Games are played to 20 points (2s and 3s), win by 1.
    • Full-court games take priority over half-court games.
    • The offensive player calls fouls; disputes (e.g., traveling, out of bounds) are resolved by a shot from the top of the key.
    • Jump balls alternate possession based on initial possession.
    • No over-and-back rule applies.

  • The track measures 1/9 mile per lap. Walk in the inside lanes and jog/run in the outside lanes.
  • Follow posted directional signage at all times.
  • Use caution when entering the track and yield to existing traffic.
  • Pass others safely on the outside.

  • Change clothing only in designated cabanas or changing rooms.
  • Changing in open locker room areas is prohibited.
  • Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited in the locker rooms. No exceptions.
  • Be respectful of others and limit your time in cabanas and changing rooms.
  • Place used towels in the designated towel bins. Do not leave towels on the floor or benches.
  • Secure your belongings by locking your locker.
  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the locker rooms.
  • Report policy violations or safety concerns to UW Recreation staff immediately.

  • Shoes are not permitted on the mats.
  • No acrobatics or tumbling.
  • Sparring or other activities involving blows to the head are strictly prohibited for general facility use. These activities are only permitted when conducted as part of a recognized Rec Club, Martial Arts or Sport Skill class, or under a previously approved agreement with UW Recreation.

  • Commercial swim attire or clean workout clothing is required.
  • Sit on a towel.
  • No street shoes allowed.
  • Keep volume on headsets low.
  • Do not pour water on the heating units. This is a dry sauna.

  • Only barefoot kicking of bags is permitted 鈥 absolutely no street shoes.

  • No court markings or tape on the floors.
  • Shoes that mark the floor are not permitted.
  • Activity spaces are generally available for drop-in use when not reserved for UW Recreation programs or scheduled activities. The Group Cycling Studio, Personal Training Rooms A & B, and the Climbery are exceptions and are only available for UW Recreation programs and cannot be used for drop-in activities.

  • This single-occupancy room is available to UW Recreation members for nursing, prayer, or quiet relaxation on a first-come, first-served basis during operating hours. Access requires key check-out from the Equipment Issue Window (1st floor). Users are expected to keep the space clean鈥攚ipe down surfaces, take all personal belongings, and return the key promptly after use.
  • Comfortable seating, small table, countertop, sink access, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and a lockable door for privacy.

Equipment Check Out

  • UW Recreation is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen items. Lockers are available on multiple floors; keys can be checked out at the Equipment Issue Desk with a valid Husky ID or Rec Membership Card. Quarterly lockers are available for all other members; cost dependent on type of membership.
  • Most sports equipment may be checked out with a valid Husky ID, Rec Membership Card, or guest receipt. Equipment bags are also available, including softball (gloves, bat, balls, catcher鈥檚 mask), volleyball (net, ball, poles, stakes, ropes), and tug-of-war (rope).
  • Patrons are financially responsible for all checked-out equipment, including items issued to their guests. Please see the Equipment Issue Desk for full details and fine policies.

Lost and Found

  • Found items are kept at the IMA for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, items are donated and valuable items (electronic, jewelry, wallet, etc.) are sent to the HUB lost and found.
  • Found Husky Cards go to the Husky Card Office after 2 weeks.

Photography & Video

  • Photography and video recording are prohibited in UW Recreation facilities to protect patron privacy. Exceptions may be granted only with prior approval from UW Recreation staff and the Office of University Marketing & Communications.
